Coaching: The Power to Unlock, Un-stick & Unleash Yourself

Coaching is a journey of transformation - it is the art of intentional change. It’s an opportunity to pause, reflect and elevate your perspectives to accelerate performance. The field of coaching psychology is dynamic and transformative, aimed at facilitating both professional growth and personal development. Here's a deeper dive into what coaching is and how it can benefit you.

Is this one more smarmy life coaching scam?

There are, like in many industries, many coaches who might have completed a weekend course and begun their practice. They promise their clinets the world, cost a lot of money, but don’t actually deliver lasting or meaningful change.

Coaching psychology is a deeper, evidence-based field that is grounded in peer-reviewed literature and is, as such, more similar to psychology. When you attend a coaching session with Revitalise Coaching, you can rest assured that our coaches have completed postgraduate qualifications in coaching psychology, and have been accepted as professional members of the International Federation of Coaches (which requires a stringent set of requirements for membership).

What is Coaching Psychology?

Coaching psychology is an evidence-based discipline grounded in peer-reviewed psychological theories, research, and empirical methods. It integrates decades of research into cognitive-behavioral, positive psychology and humanistic approaches to facilitate deep learning, sustainable change, and personal or professional growth. Coaching psychology also emphasises the coachee’s self-efficacy and autonomy, using scientifically validated frameworks to guide behavior change rather than relying on prescriptive advice or generic motivation. This distinction from ‘pop psychology’ approaches ensures that coaching psychology remains a rigorous, ethical, and tailored practice, particularly valuable in complex or high-stakes environments.

Coaching, when practiced under the tenements of the field of coaching psychology, provides a safe, structured environment for individuals to think, reflect, and access their own intuition, wisdom, and experiences. It is a collaborative process where the coach and coachee (the person being coached) work together towards achieving specific goals. The coach's role is to bring structure and process to the sessions, offering frameworks and scaffolding to support the coachee's thinking. Unlike a mentor, who shares their own wisdom and experience, or a teacher, who provides knowledge, a coach focuses on helping you unlock your potential.

Coaching is distinct from mentoring (where someone provides guidance and advice based on their own lived experience) or psychotherapy (where someone uses their professional expertise as a psychologist or clinical psychologist to support you to address past issues and emotional healing). In coaching, vision of the future and future goals are the focus rather than past issues. If accessible and of interest to you, regular sessions create a rhythm and momentum to unstick deeper challenges.

The Role of the Coach

As your coach, I am not an expert in you - and I won’t pretend to be. Instead, my role is to create an environment that fosters self-discovery and growth. Through my professional expertise, I will generate transformation through:

  • Asking thought-provoking questions to challenge your perspectives and help you identify blind spots

  • Listening deeply to connect dots and reflect these insights back to you

  • Providing tension and disruption - this can be uncomfortable but is essential for growth, and as your coach I will supports you through this process, always in your corner.

As your coach, I will facilitate an open, safe and confidential thinking and reflecting space for you to bring your issues, ideas and challenges. This will be an open, non-biased and non-judgemental environment where I hope we can mutually build trust and respect, I will ensure I hold your confidentiality (unless I believe you are a critical risk to yourself or others, as dictated by legislation). I will support you to clarify goals significant to you, to make sense of relationships and yourself as part of the systems in which you operate, and to examine long-standing beliefs or assumptions that may limit you showing up in the world in the way you want to. I will support you to work towards attaining goals, explore personal, relational, professional, contextual and ethical issues, and consider options, implement actions, monitor progress and recognise success.

As a professional member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), I will always work within their Code of Ethics.

The Role of the Coachee (that’s you!)

As a coachee, you bring your own content, including your strengths, values, and goals. The relationship is co-created, meaning we both agree on the focus and structure of the sessions. You do not need to prepare for each session - through our conversation, I’ll help you gain clarity and focus. You’re always in charge - and the coaching session will always be your safe space for whatever you need to create your intentional change, ethically.

Benefits of Coaching: A Partnership for Growth

Coaching is a partnership where the coach provides a supportive yet challenging environment, and the coachee commits to active participation and self-improvement. This collaborative effort leads to significant, sustainable development and helps you achieve your aspirations.

By understanding the roles and benefits of coaching, you can make the most of this powerful tool for personal and professional growth.

How will my coaching sessions work?

Your coaching sessions will be tailored to your unique goals, challenges, and pace. Sessions are typically structured as deep, focused conversations where we explore your current situation and aspirations, your ideal vision for the future, the obstacles in your way, and what change means for you on different levels. We’ll begin by clarifying what you want to achieve and identifying patterns or perspectives that may be holding you back. Using evidence-based coaching psychology techniques, your coach will guide you through thought-provoking discussions, practical exercises, and reflective frameworks designed to help you gain clarity, confidence, and momentum. Each session will conclude with agreed-upon actions that align with your long-term vision and values, ensuring that change is both meaningful and sustainable. Whether you’re working through a specific challenge or seeking broader transformation, your coaching journey will be a dynamic, engaging, and empowering process—one where you remain firmly in the driver’s seat, with expert support to help you navigate the road ahead.
